The Cars So Good They Got Banned Outright

Williams' active suspension era, and the driver-aid ban of 1994

The Williams FW14B and FW15C were so dominant, using computer-controlled active suspension to keep the car flat through every corner, that the FIA banned the entire category of electronic driver aids rather than let the arms race continue.

I watched Mansell win the '92 title in that car and it genuinely didn't look like the same sport as everyone else was racing. The FW14B kept the car almost perfectly flat through corners that had every other driver fighting body roll and pitch, because a computer was adjusting the suspension in real time to stop it happening. Prost did much the same the following year in its successor and won his fourth title.

The complaint from the rest of the paddock wasn't really about legality, since the technology was allowed at the time. It was that the sport was starting to feel decided by whoever had the best engineers writing the best control software, not whoever drove the best. That argument won, and from 1994 active suspension, traction control, and anti-lock brakes were all banned in one go.

I wasn't quite old enough to follow this one live, so I know the numbers rather than the feeling. Mansell won nine of sixteen races in 1992 and clinched the title with five rounds still to go — one of the most statistically dominant single seasons in the sport's history at that point. Prost's 1993 follow-up wasn't quite as overwhelming but was still comfortably a title won well before the season ended.

What's notable is how directly the FIA's response tracked the dominance. It's rare for a genuinely legal piece of engineering to get banned specifically because it worked too well rather than because it broke a rule. Most technical bans in this sport follow a controversy. This one followed two seasons of a team simply being better than everyone else was allowed to be.

I know this era entirely from the archive and from engineers who built the systems, since it predates me by years. Active suspension used hydraulic actuators at each corner, controlled by an onboard computer reading ride-height sensors dozens of times a second, to hold the car's aerodynamic platform essentially constant regardless of load transfer through corners or braking. That consistency is worth an enormous amount of cornering grip that a passively-sprung car simply can't replicate.

The ban wasn't just about active suspension in isolation — it went alongside traction control and ABS because all three shared the same underlying issue: a computer making decisions, many times a second, that a human driver previously had to make with their hands and feet. The 1994 rules pushed all of that control back into the driver's hands deliberately, which is a genuine philosophical stance about what the sport is supposed to be testing, not just a technical rule change.
