The original Brabham workshops were in Chessington, Surrey. Later moved to Guildford. The team ceased operation in 1992.

1962–1965: The Foundation with Ron Tauranac
Jack Brabham partnered with engineer Ron Tauranac to form Motor Racing Developments — which built Brabham cars — in 1962. The team's early cars were customer-sold alongside their works entries, which was unusual and financially smart. Dan Gurney was the team's most successful early driver, producing consistent results that gave Brabham its credibility as a design house. The partnership with Climax engines produced competitive if not dominant machinery through the 1.5-litre formula.
1966–1967: The Only Driver-Constructor Championship
The introduction of the 3-litre formula in 1966 gave Brabham an opportunity. They found the Repco V8 — an Australian-designed unit based on an Oldsmobile block that was reliable, if not maximally powerful. Brabham himself drove the car and won the championship. No one has repeated this achievement: designing, building, and driving a Formula One car to the world championship. Denny Hulme won the following year's title for Brabham, while Brabham himself finished second. Two consecutive championships in the only dominant two-year period of the team's history.
1970–1976: Ecclestone Takes Over
Jack Brabham retired and sold his share to Bernie Ecclestone, who had no prior team ownership experience and would go on to control the commercial rights of Formula One for 40 years. Under Ecclestone, Brabham became commercially successful and technically ambitious — signing Carlos Reutemann, then Nelson Piquet. Gordon Murray joined as designer in 1973 and produced some of the most innovative cars in the sport's history.
1978–1983: Murray, Piquet, and the Ground Effect Era
Gordon Murray's ground effect Brabham cars were among the most technically advanced of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Nelson Piquet won the 1981 championship in the BT49C — a car that used the innovative low-line aluminium monocoque Murray had been refining for years. The 1983 championship was even more dramatic: Piquet took the title from Alain Prost at the final round, with Brabham running the first BMW turbo engine to win the championship. Gordon Murray's BT52 is considered one of the most elegant racing cars ever built — an arrow-shaped machine designed entirely around the turbo's packaging requirements.
1984–1992: Decline Without Murray
Murray left for McLaren in 1987, taking his design philosophy with him. The Brabham cars that followed were competent without being inspired. The team was sold to a series of owners — Alfa Romeo, Landhurst Leasing — none of whom found the combination of resource, driver, and design that had produced the Murray years. The team ran its last race in 1992 and did not re-enter for 1993. The Brabham name has been revived for other motorsport projects since, without Formula One involvement.
Gordon Murray's work at Brabham is the most concentrated period of engineering innovation by one designer at one team.
1978
BT46B — The Fan Car
Gordon Murray's BT46B used a large fan, ostensibly for cooling, that also extracted air from beneath the car and generated suction downforce. The car was legal under a strict reading of the regulations — it used the fan primarily for cooling, the regulations banned fans used primarily for aerodynamic purposes. Niki Lauda won its only race, the Swedish Grand Prix in 1978. The team then voluntarily withdrew it after discussions with the FIA. It remains one of the most notorious one-race wonders in Formula One history.
1981
BT49 — Low-Line Mastery
Murray's BT49 was built around the premise that lower centre of gravity would extract more performance from Michelin's tyres than maximum downforce would. The aluminium monocoque was as low as could be constructed while accommodating a driver in an era before mandatory cockpit dimensions. Piquet's 1981 championship in the car was a narrow victory over Carlos Reutemann, decided at the final round in Las Vegas.
1983
BT52 — The Arrow
Murray designed the BT52 around the BMW M12/13 turbo engine's specific packaging. The engine was small enough that the car could be needle-narrow at the rear, reducing drag and allowing a clean aerodynamic profile. The car won the 1983 championship in a turbo era that Ferrari, Renault, and ultimately Honda were entering with factory resources. It's the last time a small team without factory engine backing won the championship.
The fan car is the most famous controversy. Ecclestone's stewardship has other stories.
1978
The BT46B — Legal But Gone
The fan car won its only race and was then withdrawn. Rival teams protested; Brabham argued it was legal. The FIA discussion went unresolved by formal ruling. The team withdrew the car voluntarily, though Bernie Ecclestone has suggested the withdrawal was connected to discussions about Formula One's commercial arrangements — which Ecclestone was also involved in organising at the time. The conflict of interest was noted.

The statistical curiosity with Brabham is how their championship wins split: the Constructors' titles came in 1966 and 1967 with Repco engines, while the Piquet era 1981 and 1983 championships were Drivers' titles only — the Constructors' went to Williams and Ferrari respectively because Brabham's total season points didn't match the team with the dominant second driver. Piquet versus a reliable team-mate would have added two Constructors' titles to the count. Murray's car was fast enough for two championships, the driver line-up wasn't broad enough for the team to accumulate the constructors' points.

The BT46B fan car and the BT52 are the two most technically creative cars built by the same designer for the same team.
Murray's approach was to find the aerodynamic principle that the regulations permitted and exploit it fully. The fan car is the most extreme example — using a technically-legal loophole to achieve suction downforce through mechanical means. The BT52 is the opposite approach: minimising drag by minimising the packaging. Both cars were designed by the same person with the same philosophy — the regulations tell you what you can't do, everything else is available. The BT52 in particular is an example of how packaging constraints can produce better aerodynamic outcomes than unconstrained design. The BMW engine was small. Murray made the car small. The result was faster than cars with more powerful engines in a larger body.
