1977–2020
Williams Grand Prix Engineering
Founded by Frank Williams and Patrick Head. Frank Williams had previously run a team called Wolf Williams Racing (1976) and before that Frank Williams Racing Cars. The 1977 team — co-owned with Head — was the one that produced championships.
2020–present
Williams Racing
Sold to Dorilton Capital in August 2020. The Williams family departed. Jost Capito arrived as CEO in 2021. Now competing with Mercedes customer engines and a team being rebuilt from the bottom. George Russell's 2019–2021 seasons were the highlight of the transition era.
Frank Williams built a championship team from a shed. Patrick Head built a car that changed the sport. Then it all went very quiet for a long time.
1969–1976: Frank Williams, the Long Approach
Frank Williams started in racing by buying and selling second-hand Formula Three cars, progressing through a series of small teams before he had the capital and organisation to build his own. The early years were marked by financial difficulty — Williams remembers being unable to pay for fuel on occasion. The pivotal partnership was with Patrick Head, an engineer of genuine ability who joined in 1977 and co-founded Williams Grand Prix Engineering. Head's first cars were competent. The FW07 changed everything.
1979–1981: Ground Effect and the First Championships
Patrick Head's FW07, introduced for the 1979 season, was a ground-effect masterpiece. The sliding skirts that sealed the undercar to the road created suction forces that pressed the car to the track at cornering speeds previously impossible. Alan Jones won the 1980 Drivers' Championship. Williams won the Constructors' in 1980 and 1981. In 1980, Williams had the fastest car, the fastest driver, and the most methodical team management in the sport. It was the beginning of a decade of competitiveness that only ended when the money found other outlets.
1982–1985: Keke Rosberg and the Turbo Transition
Keke Rosberg won the 1982 championship in a normally-aspirated car in an era when turbos were becoming dominant. He won once all season and still took the title — a statistical anomaly produced by points dispersal among turbo teams. Williams resisted turbos longer than most, then committed fully to a Honda partnership in 1984. The combination took two seasons to mature.
1986–1992: Honda, Renault, and the Active Car
Honda supplied Williams from 1984, and the combination produced championships for Mansell in 1992, Prost in 1993, Hill in 1996, and Villeneuve in 1997. The 1992 season was particularly dominant: the FW14B with active suspension won fifteen of sixteen races. The active suspension system — computer-controlled hydraulics managing ride height, wheel load, and cornering stiffness in real time — produced a car that conventional suspension couldn't compete with. It was banned for 1994.
1994: Imola
The 1994 San Marino Grand Prix weekend killed two drivers, injured a third, and changed Formula One's relationship with safety permanently. Roland Ratzenberger died in qualifying in a Simtek. Ayrton Senna, Williams's number one driver, died on lap 7 of the race in the FW16. The investigation into the accident's cause — column failures, suspension failure, track re-entry mechanics — was legal and technical for years. Formula One's safety transformation from 1994 onward is directly traceable to Imola. It is the most significant non-championship event in the sport's modern history.
1996–1997: Hill, Villeneuve, and the Last Championships
Damon Hill won the 1996 championship in the FW18 — a car so fast that Hill's teammate Villeneuve won four races in his debut season. Hill was then released — controversially — before the final round. Villeneuve won the 1997 championship in the most dramatic final race in the pre-Abu Dhabi era: Schumacher deliberately drove into him to prevent a pass, was disqualified from the entire season's results, and Villeneuve took the title. It was Williams's last championship. They have not won a Constructors' title since 1997.
2000–2019: The Long Decline
The loss of BMW as an engine supplier at the end of 2005 left Williams back on customer engines at exactly the moment the regulatory and financial landscape was shifting toward works teams. The car was rarely competitive at the front, the drivers — Coulthard, Massa, Bottas, Russell — were occasionally excellent in uncompetitive machinery. Frank Williams's declining health reduced his direct involvement. George Russell's 2019–2021 seasons — extracting qualifying performances and race results from a genuinely uncompetitive car — became the most-discussed example of driver talent over machinery since Alonso's Minardi period.
2020–: The Rebuild
The sale to Dorilton Capital in 2020 provided financial stability and a cleaner organisational structure. Alex Albon arrived from Red Bull in 2022 — fast, analytical, and better at developing a car from the ground than his Red Bull years suggested. Franco Colapinto's late-season 2024 appearances provided the kind of excitement the team needs to remind people it exists. The Williams in 2026 is not yet a championship contender. It is a significantly better car than it was in 2019.

1979
FW07 — Ground Effect Mastered
Patrick Head's FW07 was the definitive expression of the Colin Chapman ground-effect concept. Wing-section tunnels under the car, sealed with sliding skirts, created low-pressure regions that generated enormous downforce without drag. Clay Regazzoni won the 1979 British Grand Prix — the first Williams victory — and Jones won the championship the following year. The FW07 was not the first ground-effect car but was the most consistently effective implementation of the idea.
1992
FW14B — Active Suspension
The FW14B used computer-controlled active suspension that adjusted ride height, spring stiffness, and wheel load in real time based on sensor data from across the car. The result was a car that remained flat through corners that would unsettle passive suspension, maintained optimal tyre contact patch in conditions that varied from circuit to circuit, and was effectively unmanageable without the electronics. Mansell won 9 of the first 10 races. The FIA banned active suspension for 1994.
1994
FW16 — The Safety Watershed
The FW16 was stripped of the driver aids that had made the FW14B extraordinary — active suspension, traction control, ABS, semi-automatic gearbox paddle activation. The car was faster on paper than the opposition; in practice it was difficult to drive on the limit. Senna's death in the FW16 at Imola triggered the most significant safety review in the sport's history. The subsequent cockpit, barrier, and track redesign work changed the risk profile of Formula One fundamentally.
1997
FW19 — Renault's Final Season
The last Williams-Renault championship car. Aerodynamically refined from the FW18, with an engine that Renault was withdrawing from the sport at the end of the season. Villeneuve won the championship. Renault left as works supplier. Williams never found an equivalent engine partnership — the BMW years were expensive and unsuccessful, and customer power units have defined their subsequent era.
A team with a long history has had a long time to accumulate difficult moments.
1994
Imola: The Question That Was Never Fully Answered
Senna's accident at Tamburello on lap 7 was the subject of a criminal prosecution in Italy, extensive technical investigation, and years of competing theories. The steering column failure hypothesis was argued, contested, and never definitively resolved to everyone's satisfaction. Williams were acquitted of criminal manslaughter charges in 1997. The accident's cause — whether mechanical, driver input, or a combination — remains technically disputed. Formula One's safety revolution that followed was the unambiguous positive legacy.
1996
Releasing Damon Hill
Williams chose not to renew Hill's contract after he won the 1996 championship, preferring Heinz-Harald Frentzen for 1997. The decision was widely regarded as a slight against the sport's reigning champion. Hill's post-Williams career — at Arrows and Jordan — never recaptured the title-winning level. The team's reasoning was never clearly stated. Frank Williams's management style did not include extensive explanation.
2003–2005
The BMW Divorce
BMW joined as engine supplier in 2000 with a works budget and ambitions of championship. The relationship produced occasional front-row qualifications, zero wins (in Williams colours — Ralf Schumacher took six podiums), and deteriorating technical communication. BMW withdrew at the end of 2005 to acquire the BAR team and renamed it BMW Sauber. Williams returned to customer Cosworth engines. The decline began in earnest.

The 1997 championship was the last time Williams performed at their historical rate. In the 28 seasons since, they have won one race — Australia 2012 with Pastor Maldonado, which Gary's model gave a 2.3% probability of happening. The statistical story is of a team that accumulated enormous historical advantage in the 1980-1997 period and has lived off that legacy since. The sale to Dorilton Capital improved the financial position. The car has improved. But the gap to the top teams remains in a range that makes championships statistically improbable. Gary does not write off Williams entirely. He wrote off their probability above 3% for 2026.

The FW14B active suspension is still the most technically sophisticated car ever put on a Formula One grid.
The active suspension on the FW14B didn't just improve the car — it changed the reference point for what a race car could do. The system was reading road surface data faster than a driver could process it and making suspension adjustments in real time. Mansell's 1992 season wasn't him being incomparably better than everyone else; it was a car operating in a different performance category. The FIA banning it for 1994 was the regulatory body deciding that the gap between what computers could do and what drivers could do was becoming too large. That conversation is happening again with 2026's ERS management systems.
